I’m usually no storm chaser but when I saw this dramatic stormy spring evening light in May, I just had to trek out to northern Eagle and Freezeout Hill in Emmett to find spots to photograph it! Here are a few favorites from that night:
With a drop of nearly 200 feet, Washington’s Palouse Falls is a monster of a waterfall. Just thinking about how someone went over the falls in a kayak in 2009 makes my stomach flip! Photos can’t quite capture the scale of the cliffs and power of the water (or the terror of standing at the unfenced edge closest to the falls to get some of these photos), but hopefully they’re enough to inspire you to check out the state park for yourself. Next time you find yourself in eastern Washington, it’s definitely worth the detour!
A winter without hardly any snow need not be entirely drab and colorless. Nature may be dormant, but with the right light (and right Photoshop) it can still be beautiful.
Just before the sun disappears below the horizon, everything is soaked in glorious, radiant warm light. Despite it being a tiny window, it’s still my favorite time of day to shoot. But combine raindrops from the day’s storms with that pre-sunset light and you get something truly magical.
Mornings and I aren’t on the best of terms. So when photographers talk about the twice-daily golden hour—magical soft lighting that flatters every face and stunningly illuminates every scene—I know I’m going to miss at least one. Good thing I’m usually alert right before sunset and like shiny things.
